Soft Systems presents Under the Pendant Light, a group show featuring painting, drawing, sculpture and performance with contributions from Harris T Ainsworth, Dylan Bissonette, Olivia Jobbe, Jessie McCarty, Nick Holmes, Brigid O’Neil, Laron Lawrence, Tong Pan, Mazzy, and Adrienne Elyse Meyers.
The billiard table catches your eye first, softly lit by the pendant above, its warm light softening the edges of the room. One leg of the table teeters slightly, propped up by a folded piece of cardboard that seems to hold the balance of the space. In the back, the Golden Tee machine hums faintly, its rolling digital landscapes illuminated beneath a faded Michelob Golden Draft poster, more artifact than advertisement. The sound of low chatter mingles with the clink of pool balls, the occasional thud of a dart hitting its mark, and the faint buzz of a TV overhead. An ATM sits by the window at the front of the bar, casting a pale glow, unnoticed until it's needed.

You step further in, unsure where the art begins or ends. A sculpture leans comfortably against the wall as if it’s always been there. A painting hangs beneath the neon beer sign, its quiet presence merging with the bar, as though it’s always belonged. The performance isn’t staged—it’s woven into the night, becoming part of the hum of the TouchTunes and the rhythm of drinks being poured. You’re not just a viewer here—you’re a participant in something that feels both familiar and strange, a memory that’s been loosened and set free.

You find yourself drawn into the noise, and you're swept up in the unpredictable rhythm that surrounds you. Is it all art, or just life wearing a different costume? There’s no answer waiting for you, only the steady pulse of the room and the wild beat daring you to step closer. Under the dimly lit pendant light, you meet your shadow, daring you to follow -- it’s an invitation. Life throws the party, unplanned and unapologetic, and you’re already part of it.- M. Martinez
